The Santhal Hul began as a mass uprising against British authority and exploitative systems. Thousands of Santhals mobilized under strong leadership. Jhano Murmu emerged as a courageous participant, actively supporting the resistance movement
During the peak of the uprising, major confrontations occurred between Santhal warriors and British forces. Jhano Murmu stood firmly in defense of her people, as the rebellion faced violent suppression by colonial troops.
Raised in the Santhal homeland, Jhano Murmu grew within a culture rooted in land, forests, and collective identity. The growing pressure of colonial policies and economic exploitation shaped her awareness and prepared her for resistance.
Though the rebellion was suppressed, Jhano Murmu’s courage became part of tribal memory. She remains a powerful symbol of indigenous pride, women’s strength, and the continuing fight for identity and dignity.
As the Santhal Hul erupted, she rose as a fearless participant in the uprising. Supporting the leadership of Sidhu and Kanhu, she helped mobilize women and stood firm during major confrontations against British forces.
Though the uprising was suppressed, the spirit of resistance endured. Jhano Murmu continues to be remembered in Jharkhand through oral traditions, cultural remembrance, and modern recognition of tribal women’s role in freedom struggles.
